-the reason he was absent for the first battle with Orochi was because he was held up fighting Ninetails at the capital. He's the one who gave her the scar across her eye, actually. She was itching to really get at him for that. When he finally made it to the village he was much, much too late and it's a fact that he's regretted for a very long time.
-was actually the previous carrier of the water tablet, to match the fact that you get the fire tablet from Kaguya. He gave it to the Emperor after he buried Himiko: ...because yeah, he was the one who laid her to rest in the water. He'd been quite fond of her. She'd known her fate and accepted it bravely, and she reminded him of someone he knew long ago. (There are those who say she loved him, but alas, it could not be! For all knew that Ushiwaka's heart was set only on the rising sun... well, that's what the poets say, anyway)
-okay one more because these are all friggin' depressing: HAS BEEN ISHAKU'S DRINKING BUDDY FOR THE LAST 100 YEARS. He just drops in from time to time across the decades, and pretty much knows just about every single one of Issun's most embarrassing childhood stories. Oh, and the baby pictures. He's seen the baby pictures, too.
