The stags strained against one another, a hoof slipped, and the lesser of the two went tumbling. That would have been the end of the matter, as natural law dictated, but as chance would have it the first pulled the second down with him, dragged down by the head. They landed on their knees, bleating and eyes wild, antlers scraping as they realized the exact gravity of the situation for the fifth time that morning.
Shikamaru watched it all with crossed arms. “Jeez. You two,” he told them, after a time. “Are complete idiots.”
“Hmm!” said one of the deer, eyes rolling up and forelegs clattering. The other echoed the sentiment. “Hmm!” It cried, wretchedly.
“All this over some girl.”
The stags had enough pride left to look a little bit offended. “Hm.”
“Feh. You’re ones stuck, aren’t you?”
The antlers clacked together again. Why yes. They were. And with their heads wrenched down like that, it had to be getting uncomfortable. Shikamaru sighed, and laid a hand on the larger ones neck. It was too exhausted to give much of a protest beyond another stumble that had it back down on its knees. The other one squalled. Shikamaru scowled.
“Hold still,” he said, and got to work.
He really hated the mating season.
