Some speculation....

So, 174 promises that things are about to get more than a little hairy. Which of course, got me thinking, which of course took a mind of its own, knocked me out and when I woke up I found this...THING blinking on the screen in front of me.
They were quiet, sizing each other up. They didn’t move, didn’t flinch, didn’t blink until Naruto finally made up his mind about it and smirked, tipping his head back with a scoff.
" ‘bout time." His foot slid back, and he crouched, knuckles touching the ground and looking up expectantly. "…Allright, allright. Let’s see whatcha got."
Dark eyes narrowed. "Don’t underestimate me."
"Same to you."
"Hn." There was a flurry of movement. Hands forming a seal. Naruto flipping a kunai out of his holster and making a lunge. Dirt and smoke flying--
Naruto skidded to a halt, eyes wide. "…That’s-"
"Sexy no Jutsu! The ultimate version!" Konohamaru proclaimed triumphantly, flipping his hair over his shoulder and posing shamelessly. "Are you impressed, /Naruto-sama/~?" He blew him a kiss.
"…Hmm." Naruto said gravely, pushing to his feet. "You’ve gotten good, Konohamaru. I’ll give ya that. But the ultimate sexy technique…" Naruto pressed his fingers together. "Still belongs to /me/!"
...And now that I've got THAT out of my system. Let's talk about Neji for a second. Hyuga Neji. I'm trying to fic him and he's coming along kicking and screaming. Or at least standing stubbornly with his nose up at me.
That aside, I like Neji. I like to make fun of Neji. He's actually one of my favorites in the series, which is kind of a strange, since my first go of the manga I absolutely HATED the guy up until the chuunin exam finals.
Keeping what's revealed about him in mind though, and reading the manga again, makes Neji seem...Well, not any less of a bastard, really. He's bitter, a drama queen, and more than a little arrogant. He's HORRIBLE to Hinata, and given her own circumstances there's not much of an excuse for that. But rereading it, all of his ranting about destiny and what can and can't be changed...
...It really does seem like the guy just wants to be proven wrong.
As mentioned before. Neji's bitter. Neji is REALLY bitter. Extremely gifted, but no matter how powerful he becomes he'll never really be acknowledged for it--because no matter what he does, he can still die by the whim of the Main House. And that knowledge was left to fester since he was four. I wonder where his mother might've been--though I get the impression she was just never in the picture to begin with.
I think one of Neji's most telling moments is the end of his fight with Hinata. I can't say that he really won that one...Since, he spent the entire fight tearing into her, and just lost it at one well placed observation. He went from tearing at her to really more tearing at himself, and she called him on it. No matter how well Neji might be able to read people, Hinata read HIM better, at least in that instant.
Then, of course, there's his team. Neji treats his teammates in general with a hell of a lot more respect than Sasuke treats ANYONE. I think the anime makes more of a point of the fact that they all know eachother very well. Which makes sense, they've been a team longer than the rookie genins. So in aftermath the Lee-Gaara fight....Well, allright first time I read that I wanted Neji to just SHUT UP ALREADY. Second time around though, he seemed almost...sad about the fact that yes, once again he was right. And let's not talk about Nejilee. At all. Please.
Also never underestimate the Naruto Effect. Brat seems to have a way of kicking sense into people (Mm. Inari, Tsunade, Neji...er, to some extent Sasuke) What ultimately what made me really like Neji is the fact that he is proven wrong in the end, and while he doesn't seem to know entirely what to do with this knowledge--it makes a difference. He seems to come out of it less nasty at least. Of course, I don't doubt he'll be any less of a bastard but he might be a bit happier with himself. And a little nicer to Hinata. Really would love to see more with those two. They could do eachother a world of good.
....That said, maybe he'll actually sit still and let me write him for a change.
