And, er. To make up for that, uh, ficbit I started a few ages ago and may finish...Some day.

She woke up with the taste of blood in her mouth and the sun in her eyes; her chest hurt, and everything was faded and off focus, but she had the impression that she wasn’t alone. A hand, hot and clammy (afraid) curled over hers, and she heard someone speaking very far away. That someone had a gruff voice, but she smiled, because that someone was there.

"Goddamnit, Hinata…Why didn’t you forfeit?’

Kiba-kun. She realized dully, still smiling as she slipped back into unconsciousness. That’s Kiba-kun. Please don’t worry, Kiba-kun. I did it because I wanted to. Because I…

Because…

She meant to say that to him, but his voice faded too fast, and the blackness closed in. She thought she heard a machine blare, but it was gone quickly, too.

She did not dream, and when she woke again the taste of blood was still in her mouth, but it was dark outside, and she was alone.

It hurt, but not as much as before. She could sit up, just a little, to look. There wasn’t much to see, really. Just a hospital room, cold and white. But it had big window, and it was a clear night, so she set aside the pain, and just watched the stars, so distant and tiny.

Every one of those stars was a sun, and somewhere they shone bright and beautiful and warm.

"Naruto-kun…" she whispered, "Thank you."

And even though her chest ached with new pain, she felt happy.

She was still awake when Kurenai-sensei paid her a visit that morning. Her teacher was brief, mindful of her injuries, and did most of the talking: Told her who else had made it through the preliminaries, who hadn’t, and who Shino-kun was going to fight. She wanted to ask about Naruto-kun, but Kurenai-sensei seemed to want to avoid the topic. She left it at that.

There would be a month to find out, before the third test. Well, less really, since the news was already several days old—and had she been unconscious all that time?

"…You did well, Hinata," her teacher said before leaving, resting a hand on her head gently (like a mother). "We’re all proud of you."

Proud.

She had lost badly, been beaten within an inch of her life, and they were proud of her.

She felt a little proud, too. Just a little. Just enough to feel changed. She held onto that feeling for the rest of the morning, keeping her hands cupped over her heart. She fell asleep that way at noon.

The next few days there was news around the hospital, and she was well and awake enough to hear it, buzzing outside in the halls. She heard many names. Gaara of the Sand (fear, so much fear in their voices). Rock Lee (sadness, pity—what had happened?). Uchiha Sasuke—

"That guy…" Kiba-kun said, draped lazily across two chairs next to her bed and rubbing his (still sore) nose, "…Is fucking crazy. Don’t envy the stinkbomb, having a teammate like him." Akamaru-kun barked in agreement. She had been awake when they’d visited that time, and she gladly welcomed his bad, loud manners and canine grin. He didn’t talk about her fight, and he didn’t hold her hand…He was there, though.

"It’s understandable…" She said, and winced.

Kiba was immediately concerned, leaning forward with a hand on her shoulder, "You ok?"

He’d been worried about her enough, these past few days—it was easy to read in his posture. She nodded.

"Shit, Hinata…You…" He shook his head. "Get better soon, all right?"

"…I’ll try…" she promised, and surprised herself with how loud that whisper sounded.

She must have smelled like blood.

That night, she didn’t dream of very much—she could’ve believed that she didn’t dream at all but for the voices, too distant to be anything bleeding in from the waking world. Sometimes, she heard her father, listing in that stern voice the faults of her stance, and the exact numbers of openings she’d allowed in her fight. Sometimes she heard Kurenai-sensei, correcting her firmly, but praising her for her strengths—a few as they were, she knew. Kurenai-sensei was always too generous. Kiba-kun argued with Shino-kun, and Shino-kun said nothing, and once, distantly, she thought she heard Naruto grinning, as strange as it seemed.

She woke up thinking it was nice to hear a little, instead of seeing too much.
That was the morning she was allowed out of bed. She felt stiff and old, sliding her feet into the slippers and feeling for the first time the breeze that came in through a window someone must have opened while she slept.

It wasn’t a long trip, by any means. A simple walk up, and down the hallway, and a nurse hovered near her the entire time. Everything prickled, and ached, and cried from neglect, but it felt good to feel her muscles move again. They would forgive her, soon enough.

The next day she took a longer walk, with steadier steps. She felt young, like she was learning all over again, and when Kiba-kun had loudly demanded that the nurse ‘Buzz off and let me take care of my teammate’, she’d found herself clinging to his arm.

"…Sorry…"

Kiba-kun snorted. "What for?" He said, and scowled.. "I don’t get all these apologies."

Once, she remembered, awake at midnight and watching the sky, she’d held another boy’s arm like that. It’d been warm, and safe. But it was a long time ago, and her father had called them back quickly. They’d wandered too far, too fast. The boy was scolded, even though it had been her idea. But still….. He had only looked surprised when she apologized the next day, with her head bowed so low that she almost fell forward.

"Why are you bowing to me? It’s all right."

It’s all right.

She missed him.

"Naruto-kun is fighting…Who?"

Shino-kun’s eyebrows shot up. "No one told you." He said and realized at the same time, quietly.

"N-no," she’d coughed, because she’d sat up too fast. Her breath caught on something. "No." And she didn’t say anymore, because she knew Shino-kun understood. Silence was its own language. She learned it all over again that day.

Still needs editing. A lot of it. And I'm not entirely happy with Kiba and Shino in this, as they just sort of wormed their way in there. Kiba especially with his BIG FAT CRUSH. x.x
