Captain Aizen gave him a puzzled look on the walkway that afternoon. “You look pale, Abarai-kun.”
Renji had flushed. “…eh, Captain,” he’d answered, hanging his head. That was when he realized he was the only one who could hear it. He was off duty not long after that, and it quieted for a bit. Nearly bearable, until he brushed by Hinamori on his way back to the barracks, and the noise spiked with such a pitch he’d given a soft snarl in answer and had startled the hell out of her.
“Abarai-kun?”
“Shut the hell up--” he’d snapped, and then immediately realized who he’d been facing when he said that. “e-eh. Not you Hinamori—m’fine. Fine” He jumped the railing to get away from her.
The howl had almost a laughing quality at his back as he went. It crawled all the way up his spine and down again and it settled at his ear.
“The fuck,” he’d muttered, as he flung himself onto his futon that night. The sounded faded some, but that was when the ache in his temples started. He twisted. He turned. He banged his knee rolling over. He developed an unquenchable itch in his neck. When a light doze reached him he was jolted out of it by the flicker of something slick against his eyelid. The feeling a body, leaning over him from above—
Renji threw himself over and onto all fours and wakefulness with a shout. He stayed there stiffly a moment, legs locked, knuckles against the floorboards. The moon was reflecting off the wood. The air smelled like wet fur.
"Show yourself," he'd hissed, like a swearword, into the empty air.
There was a large white animal sitting at his door.
