The client was going to be a problem, Phoenix could tell. Anyone who sparkled that damn much was always a problem and you couldn’t really blame the guy for going on what experience he had, right?

Maya was clearly having no such issues.

“Nick,” she stage whispered, with wide eyes. “Niiick. This guy! We definately have to make sure ALL CHARGES ARE DROPPED. He is COMPLETELY INNOCENT.”

Mike Dagger, up and coming rocker and complete teen idol, smiled winningly across the window of the detention cell. His teeth winked. His eyes hadn’t left Maya.

“Completely innocent,” muttered Phoenix. “I’m not so sure about that….”

Maya’s cheeks puffed up. “Nick,” she hissed, between gritted teeth. “Try not to let your old fogeyness make you completely suspicious about all of us young people.”

“W…what! But he’s only a year…”

The twenty-three year old Dagger broke in again: “…it means a lot to me Miss, that you’d be willing to take my case…”

…who’s the attorney here again.

Maya was back to being sweet as candy (never mind she’d eaten it all that morning when Phoenix had thought a dish of it might be a nice addition to the office). “It’s nothing, Mr. Dagger! We believe you! We believe you completely!”

And there’s that word again…

Dagger laughed pleasantly, in a way that sent of alarms of WARNING, WARNING through the back of Phoenix’s head. This was going south and going south fast in all the worst ways.

“Shame I’m behind these bars,” said Dagger, having a look around. “If I could, this’d be where I’d… ”

“You’d…?” Maya leaned forward; there was a blush on her cheeks. OBJECTION, Phoenix tried to think at her, hoping perhaps a lack of pulse was not a complete requirement for pinging off of those psychic tendencies she had. OBJECTION. Your honor, how is this relevant to anything. Anything ever--

“Why,” said Dagger, raising his hands sheepishly. “This’d be where I’d have to ask you out to--”

“MR. DAGGER. ARE YOU AWARE THAT THE WITNESS IS ONLY SEVENTEEN YEARS OLD.”

“…eh?” The client looked confused.

“Eeeeh?!” Maya looked mortified.

“And we’d better go investigate that trailer!” Phoenix clamped a hand on Maya’s shoulder and, ignoring her various shouts of ‘What?!’ and ‘WHAT?’ and eventually ‘OPPRESSOR’ and ‘You’re worse than my sister!!’ he steered her out of the detention center, out of the general vicinity of the detention center, and out of harms way.
