Yuletide 2018

Happy Holidays everyone! This year has definitely an improvement on last one, where spouse had broken her leg and we were staying at my in-laws. This year not only was my wife entirely recovered, but we managed to host our parents at a party and it was largely successfully! (Last minute scrambling to shove the shoes upstairs nonwithstanding -- also my realization I didn't know how to use a coffee maker).

I participated in AO3's Yuletide exchange again this year (which admittedly, I've been doing since before AO3) and for the first time I got a fandom I've asked for since I started doing it like, I don't know, ten years ago now? Flower Power. A Dragon's Bait fic. It has a sneezing dragon and some light romance and I keep rereading it like I did the original book. So it's been a good start to my very secular Christmas morning.

I also received δίπυλος, for Fate Grand Order. Which was some super satisfying hurt/comfort for Waver and Alexander following the Fate Zero event. Waver and Alexander are my favorite part of the Fate Franchise, so it's great to see them get to have resolution. (Bonus tiny Gilgamesh!)

I also received Neoblastic. A Castlevania (cartoon) fic as a treat! It's Vlad and Lisa discussing baby Alucard, which both hurts and makes me really happy.

Sabrina

So recent Netflix watches have included an episode of The Frankenstein Chronicles and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Frankenstein Chronicles

I really wanted to enjoy this because the original novel is one of my favorites and the idea of a detective story from outside of the novel really appealed to me but I found it so baffling! And has not nearly enough to do with, well, Frankenstein. The action was set up well enough but the way the mystery unfolds makes it impossibly hard to figure out where exactly the characters are going and why. Also, I guess Sean Bean has syphilis? I'm not sure why he had that jolt wakeup moment about a dream involving a little girl walking out a door, though. Anyway, not nearly enough actual monster action for me to keep going, also HE TOTALLY GOT THAT KID KILLED IN THE FIRST EPISODE AND KIND OF SHRUGGED IT OFF?! DUDE!

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
I'm bewildered at the amount of British actors in this. I'm not sure why they decided to make this a Sabrina take if they were going to basically have it be Our Version Of Hogwarts (now with more actual Satanism). Only in an American show would Richard Coyle, the Joey of British sitcoms, actually play a villain. (He cleans up nice, though, I'll grant you). I really, really wanted to like this. I liked a lot about it (MIRANDA OTTO?!?!) but the race optics are unfortunate re: Sabrina vs. Prudence. And also the camera's WEIRDLY pervy. Like, someone shooting this likes putting teenaged girls into sexually vulnerable positions WAY TOO MUCH. And yes, I noticed how the camera followed Miranda Otto's ass in that one scene. There's something so sleazy about the way this show is shot -- then I learned it's the people who are doing the Dark! Edgy! Riverdale! And I understood.

Cat's cute, though.

I was a security guard at a major art museum

I'm reposting this from Tumblr largely because 1) I still want to write more and 2) somehow this ended up one of my most popular posts there and I feel the need to immortalize it.

Over the course of my time there:

-A woman came in with a skirt made of neckties. Just. Neckties, all strung together to make a skirt. She had leggings on underneath, thank god.

-Been asked where the dinosaurs are

-Been asked where the animals are

-Been asked for “The Bitch With The Pitcher” (Vermeer’s “Woman with a Water Pitcher,” by the way)

-Been asked for the Mona Lisa

-Got bored and learned the name of every single one of the Buddhas

-Got bored and learned the name of five Chinese dynasties (long day in Asian Art)

-Chilled in the Buddha room

-Watched someone escorted out for trying to take a nude photo in the Arms and Armor section

-Been asked for the Michelangelo’s, then the Raphael’s, then the Leonardo’s, then the Donatello’s (they were naming ninja turtles)

-Heard curator in Musical Instrument section play Night On Bald Mountain on giant historical pipe organ while laughing maniacally.

-Fielded a day when a filthy counterfit version of the museum program was disseminated among visitors, guiding them to the filthiest art in the museum – such as the painting of Cupid peeing on Venus

-guarded Cupid peeing on Venus

-Been asked for the Mona Lisa

-Been asked if I had seen the First Lady of Mexico (she had gone missing)

-Been asked for that one sculpture of Kronos that is featured in Percy Jackson WHICH DOESN’T EXIST GUYS (directed children to sculptures of Poseidon with trident instead, children were very happy)

-Witnessed two Secret Service Agents get into a swordfight with pieces of packing material.

-been asked by a very polite Fransiscan monk in full brown robes if he had found ‘One of us. He has gone missing.”

-Found missing monk and returned him to the herd

-Coworker was asked for the Ark of the Conveant

-Same coworker was asked for the Baseball Hall of Fame

-stopped about 15,000 people from poking that one lion statue in the nuts

-saw a woman in a banana suit with banana shoes take a picture in front of an Egyptian temple

-Been asked for the Mona Lisas (plural)

As of 12/5/18:

Other stories:

- had a conversation with a very disoriented Turkish curator. Between her limited English and my more limited Turkish, we bonded over reality TV and how rude the older visitors were. "In my country, old people STAY HOME," she said, very vehemently.

-Watched the President of Austria admire the chair he'd donated to an exhibition

-somehow managed to not be sick after staying in a Francis Bacon exhibition all day.

-Discovered one of the rooms in Asian Art was actually a hidden elevator to a third floor gallery

-Watched three women in full victorian gowns stroll through Egyptian Art.

- been asked for the Mona Lisa.

-was asked, by a European visitor, "Was this building once a palace or was it built for the museum?" Extremely reasonable question in Europe, but this was the US, so no.

-watched a co-worker take a shot glass away from Bruce Willis

-watched two visitors pick another visitor up in an attempt to look like a giant balloon dog.

-had a coworker confiscate someone's dildos

-listened to an impromptu violin performance as played on a Stradivarius violin

- spent a lot of time staring at Naked Violin Guy.

Sfeer Theory Issue One

And it begins

We're preparing to bring Sfeer Theory, issue 1 to print!

To that end, we've launched our Kickstarter campaign. If you love Sfeer Theory, please have a look -- if only for the AWESOME video Chira has put together (and it is, indeed, very awesome. Visit our Kickstarter page to have a look and place a donation, if you'd like.

We’re hoping to have the print edition ready for Anime Boston in April. The first volume will include Chapter 1 + a number of fun extras that will further explore Luca and the world around him.

Yuletide and The New Year

So from now on I will be posting from Moonsheen @ Dreamwidth. LJ's been good to me, but then it wasn't, so here we go.

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone still checking this journal! I know I've been sparse this year. It's been a bit of a rollercoaster.

My grandmother died this year. She was the matriarch of my family in a big way, and so her absence has resulted in a lot of large changes. The old house I grew up in is being sold, and it's sad, but it's just what happens. I do miss her, but she was very unhappy and ill after my grandfather died.

It's odd that given the amount of sadness this year I can still say that on a whole I've been better then I've been in a long time. I've been able to stay in a stable, happy relationship with someone I really care about for the first time in...well, ever. I've left a job that wasn't getting me anywhere in favor of a job that, while it pays less, I find ultimately more satisfying and is closer to what I really want to do. I've eliminated a lot of the drains and stresses that made the year previous very difficult. My relationship with my family is still...complicated but it's improved, some, since I came out fully to them-- which was a pleasant surprise. And I've started to really work towards a dream that I've finally sort of admitted I have: i.e. to have a hard, published copy of something I wrote. To that end, I wrote not one book this year, but three, which, uh, needless to say has come as something of an eye-opener of what I'm capable of. To that end, I'm determined to do my best to see those books through and, if these ones don't cut it, I'll just write another, and another, until something takes.

It's oddly liberating to know I can do that. And that I have accomplished all these things. I don't find the idea so completely implausible now, and here's hoping I can really make it happen.

On a fandom front I've been a bit MIA. I participated in Yuletide this year, though.

I wrote Darkling I Listen, a Folklore fic. Folklore is a very obscure video game released for the PS3. It's kind of a flawed game with fun game play, beautiful designs, mediocre writing, and a confusingly kickass ending that made me really like it.

I received On The Way Back by FiKate, a very sweet story for Diana Wynne Jones' Hexwood. (One of my new favorite books) Mordion/Vierran, which has my heart. Schmoooop.

I also received Angels in the Aquarium, by That Person Who Did The Texts From Cephalopods Story also known as Volta_Arovet also known as That Person Who Put Up With Me While I Wrote A Book On Her Couch (and was only mildly exasperated by it). She wrote me Dane + Billy antics from China Mieville's Kraken and yes, tentacles were involved and no, amazingly they were not the sexy kind.

In conclusion, it's been a very good year.
