And, because I do love him, back to the basics:






When Naruto was little, he used to mark off the date on his calendar, standing on his toes-- because he always hung it high on the wall. Circled three times in red marker, with added lines to make the number really shine, he’d finish by taking the marker to his face, tracing the scars on his cheeks, giving them a little curl at the ends, and grin at the reflection in the big cracked mirror he used to have leaned up near the refrigerator. No one else seemed to understand the significance, which was too bad; when he was little Naruto felt people were missing out, so busy walking past him and frowning--Which they always did, but on that day it seemed like they did it more than normal. It wasn’t until he was a couple of years older that Naruto learned yes, there was a reason for that and thought hell, wasn’t it just his luck to be born on a day of mourning.
