And because she didn't want to be left out...
Be born. Be a girl. Be simple. Be small. Be fragile. Be young. Be quiet and listen, listen carefully (because you have to). Be attentive. Be sharp. Be bright. Be quick, a quick study, if you want to make it you have to be—and don’t be a failure, whatever you do. Be watchful. Be gifted. Be fours years old.
Be alone. Be lonely. Be studious. Be harder (don’t cry). Be mature about it. Be untouched. Be untouchable. Be fast, fast handed, fast footed. Be balanced. Be consistent. Be proud, be right, be strong, stronger than anyone else and be seen. Most importantly be seen. Be five.
Be afraid. Be afraid, and be respectful. Be polite to your elders. Be level headed. Be forceful. Be willful. Be precocious. Be hard, harder—don’t be soft (they can’t hurt you nothing can hurt you). Don’t ever be soft. Be valued. Be looked at. Be approved of. Be proper. Be worthy, most of all be worthy. Be six years old.
Be curious. Be confused but be persistent. Be determined. Be his daughter. Be a good daughter (but you’re someone’s sister too). Be his perfect daughter, but the second, always the younger—don’t be heir, but be the best alternative. Be cool, be put at a distance. Be hurt, but don’t be foolish. Be trained. Be trained hard. Be seven. Be eight.
Be haughty. Be stubborn. Be confident and uncompromising, like your father. Be afraid, be respectful, but be like him, above all else. Be bewildered (but don’t let them see don’t let them know). Be angry. Be outraged. Be frustrated. Be heartbroken. (or they’ll catch you off guard) Be practical (you never expected him to love you). Be a grateful child. Don’t be foolish. Don’t be silly, silly and weak. Above all don’t be weak, like your sister. (even if you love her she could never make it soft and fragile but still heir damn her still heir). Be stronger than that. Be the strongest. Be admired. Be wanted. Be like /him/: Be ungrateful. Be insolent. Be forgiven, always, always forgiven (that bastard) no matter how great the offense. Be jealous. Be bitter. Be cruel. Be strong like your cousin. Be. Be just like him. Even if you hate him (be resentful) he is strong (be stronger) and your father loves him (be watchful) your father loves him and (be honest) not you and there’s nothing you can do but be, be, behave, become whatever he wants, whatever all of them want you’ll be--but it won’t change anything at all.
An attempt to set her straight in my head. Erm. Failed. Miserably.
