I had a dream the other night, that I was standing on my grandparent's little beach, by their sea wall, with the tide rising and the waves crashing against me. Each one was getting bigger and bigger, and I was trying to climb up the seawall before one of them got big enough to suck me under. One of them did. It's a slight step down from the typical 'tidal waves coming run ohshit I can't move' dreams, I guess. How many people have those, anyway? A lot, from what I can tell. They're like the chasing dreams. Everyone gets them.
I remember the first time I actually did get pulled under by a wave though. Must've been six or so, on a beach in Long Island. The wave bowled me over and the tide pulled me about three feet before I resurfaced, not much, all things considered, but I remember keeping my eyes open and watching the water stream past me. Afterwards, I wasn't so shaken as I was outraged. I demanded that my dad 'beat up' the wave for me. I think I expected him to kick it into submission.
It's happened plenty of times after, it's not nearly so scary anymore, but there's always that bit of panic the second you go down. Not that I see real waves very often, living on the sound. The last time it happened was in Australia, almost a year ago. The water's beautiful in Australia. I'd never seen the ocean so blue, except maybe the last time I'd been there, when I was three, and I wasn't old enough to try it out then. Don't remember swimming, but I do remember lying back on a boat on Sydney harbor, and watching the bridge pass overhead.
In the worst nightmare I ever had I was killed by a pretzel.
...I was a weird little kid.
