Bleach shortfic
Aug. 16th, 2004 10:12 pmI should be working on other things. But this just popped up. Short. Very rough. Not much more to say. Oh. Right. pre-series.
There was something moving outside. He was the first to notice; stirring with a snort and lifting his head heavily. She was dozing; her legs numb under his weight. She felt the puff of his breath over her stomach and opened her eyes. There, there it was the dark flicker from the walkway—-she saw it in the bone white gleam of moon filtered through the shoji. She also saw his narrowed eyes and the twist in his lips. She also felt the low rumble in his chest against her thighs and frowned.
“Renji,” Rukia whispered, and when he said nothing she laid her hand over the back of his head. The muscles were taut in the arm brushing her side. “Renji, no.” When there was no answer to that, she curled her hand in his hair. It slid rough against her palm, cool and still damp.
“No,” she said more firmly, pushing his head down as he began to twist away. The growl was hot on the skin there, and it shivered in vague recollection of his tongue, less than an hour earlier. She tightened her hand in less vague and more present annoyance. “Quiet. Let me.” It was her quarters.
He gave her a sour look, but his eyes dropped. Rukia loosened her grip and let him roll away. Her legs prickled as she stood--she was sticky and stiff and resolved to get it over with, whatever it was. She fetched a robe from the floor and her sword from the desk. Renji lay back and watched her vanish out the door. He tucked his arms behind his head and breathed out. Counting off in his head: one. two -- there was no sound – three. On the count of seven she returned, bare leg showing through the awkward swing of cloth and bare blade showing a few breaths above the hilt.
It was clear now, though it had been raining a more than an hour earlier. Her steps trailed droplets behind her. There was a smudge of red at her wrist, which she gave a dark look. The curl of her lip was oddly pretty for all its haughty displeasure; it made her look like her brother, and Renji said nothing of it.
She would have taken no higher compliment.
