Our Little Cruelties

Near the middle of her first year in Academy, Momo found her classmate on the western grounds. He was idling at a footbridge, still as he could ever manage, picking apart a blossom that must have fallen from one of the nearby trees. She hadn’t known him very well then, but recent near death experience had cemented steady enough a friendship—and they had a group project due by the end of that week, besides.
“You come here a lot,” she noticed, leaned on the railing. “Don’t you, Kira-kun?”
Kira, shaking smashed petals off his fingers, flushed. “Ah,” he stammered out and then, as though that was hardly sufficient, went on to explain: about his mother, about it being her favorite place in the whole of the grounds, how she once studied here with his father and…ah. well. How he liked it, too.
“Oh,” said Momo, curious in the way silly girls her age were: thoughtlessly so. “Your parents are Shinigami?”
Kira’s fingers stopped their drumming on the wood. “…yes.”
“They must be very proud of you.”
He had smiled. “I like to think so.”
It wasn’t until the near the end of their third year that Momo heard offhand from Inuzuri Rukia of class 3-2 that both of Kira Izuru’s parents were dead.
