When the swelling goes down and the redness fades, and Rikichi can look in the mirror and think ‘COOL’ instead of "ohgodOW", that is when he decides that it is all worth it and he’s afraid of nothing.

So he goes to school with the gauze off:

“Woah,” they say.

“Ahaha. Yeah,” he says.

“Did it hurt?” they ask.

“Actually, not that bad!” he lies.

“What’s it supposed to be?” they ask.

“Oh, it’s supposed to look like--” he answers.

“I think it looks wild,” they say.

“Thanks,” he says.

“Didn’t think your dad was the type to go for these things!”

“Oh,” says Rikichi.

“He’s not,” says Rikichi.

“Crap,” says Rikichi.

He resolves to never go home again.
