Basch isn't so startled by some aspects of Archadian custom. This is primarily because Landis was a nation that bordered Archades closely enough that there was a lot of intermarriage, shared languages--if different dialect. It's the reason the accents share some similiarities. Landis bears closer resembalance to Archadia's older traditions, however, as in the last century Archadia's undergone such rapid technological advances that Landis failed to keep up with. Compared to most other nations Landis was fairly backwards. Basch has never, ever not stumbled a little at that first lurch of an city airshuttle, even after over ten years of living in Rabanastre, where such modes of transportation aren't uncommon.
...to that end, Basch generally amazed most of his comrades and commanding officers with his tendency to utterly dawdle in returning from a patrol. He had a tendency to avoid most swift and efficient modes of transportation, preferring to take long detours on foot through the winding roots on the ground levels of the city. At first this was just part of getting acclimated to the place, but Basch never really fell out of his general wonder of Rabanastre and its people. Even at the lofty rank of Captain he'd sometimes have to be tracked down by subordinates when he failed to report in in a timely fashion. They'd find him in the streets, playing kick ball with a gaggle of children, having completely lost track of the time. Captain Basch's love of his adopted nation was no secret to anyone.
Basch a very good cook. Does most of the cooking for the party. He's also the one who carries most of Ashe's gear and supplies. She never asked him to do this, and he never complained, it is just something that was done. Vaan at one point complained that Basch never carries his stuff. ...Basch immediately began to heft up his rucksack. Vaan immediately said HE DIDN'T HAVE TO DO THAT CRAP I WAS KIDDING. Basch gave him a rather amused look and Vaan felt like the guy'd put one over him.
Basch actually has a really mischeivous sense of humor. People never catch on to this, mostly because he has such a straight face. They think he's completely serious. A cadet once asked him what he could do to get on Captain Azelas' good side. Basch made a light mention of rose scented bath oils. ... Vossler's next name day was a very interesting affair.
Everything that Basch is at present: dutiful, devoted, determined, brave. Is all the culmination of the agonizing effort to bring himself just a little bit farther from that frightened boy who abandoned his family in a dying nation over a decade ago.
He'll never, ever, ever say this, but Vaan reminds him a lot of Noah. At least the Noah that he remembers. Clever, headstrong, and amazingly passionate, something he realizes has died in the brother he knows now. ... it gladdens him to see it still living in someone else.
A great deal of his initial months as Judge Magister was spent with Larsa learning about how Gabranth lived. It wasn't for the purpose of playing the role: he just felt he owed it to his brother to know how he lived, where he'd been, what he'd seen, the people he'd known, things he'd done--the bad and the good. He was relieved to learn it wasn't all suffering. ...Larsa was very much evidence of that, having been in part raised by him. It brought Basch a measure of peace.
Basch understands the suffering of the cadets. Gods, he understands. He had to wear those standard issue hotpants too. Him and Vossler were placed in the same unit together, much to the equally young and very snotty Vossler's annoyance. Basch in general offended his pureblooded Dalmascan noble sensibilities. WEIRD STINKY FOREIGN COMMONER. BAH. ONLY DALMASCANS ARE BEST SUITED TO FIGHT FOR DALMASCA!!! That foreigner's skill with a bow and good timing in an unfortunate run in with one of those dinosaurs in the desert quieted Vossler down considerably about this.
Basch and Rasler were very good friends. Basch helped Rasler improve his hunting skills, and during the Dalmascan parties time in Nabradia ironing out the details of their alliance they became very close companions. Basch found the Salikawood a very strong reminder of home, and Rasler was very curious about Basch's travels and adventures. To this day, in closer company, he refers to the prince as 'Rasler' and not 'Lord Rasler', as a measure of how close they'd been. ...Ashe used to be very exasperated at how BIG BORING OLD CAPTAIN kept stealing her fiancees time.
Basch met Old Dalan as a teenager who'd stumbled in from the desert suffering from heat stroke and an awful sun burn. ...the man looked very much the same, and knew his name before he said it. He has his suspicions about that, but he's too grateful to ever follow them.
