The tattoos are real, and she loves 'em. Penelo has a THING for tattoos, she'll probably eventually end up getting them all down her back. They have an exotic quality that's a very good thing for a dancer to have, even better for a Sky Pirate to have. They will probably always all be types of desert flowers and vines and things though.
Got her licenses for axes before Vaan did. The result was Basch showing her how to really, really properly swing it. Basch shows her a lot of the details of how to hit things real good. During their adventures, random beasts on the road was a little bit like a family picnic with those two. Penelo's really, really missed having big brothers (she used to have three) so Basch is very much a nice subsitute, even if she teases him about being kinda old, about totally always carrying Ashe's stuff, and sometimes about his hair. At the final battle when she left Larsa to tend to Gabranth, she kinda touched Basch's arm to ask him if HE was okay, too. Penelo's concerned for the people she cares about.
Penelo, however, is a sky pirate through and through. She loves the adventure. She also has a good head on her shoulders, which is a necessary thing when her partner's got a tendency to sort of just rush in. She is also very, very bendy. She uses this often to her advantage. She's an expert at martial arts, she collects knowledge of dances from all parts of the world. From ball room to basic Dalmascan belly dance, she's pretty varied as far as it goes. She can fake it pretty well if she has to.
Is very bird-like. The way she moves, the way she cocks her head, the way she eats too. She also really does like shiny things. She'll end up wearing a lot of bracelet and rings later in her sky pirate days, I'm pretty sure. She also enjoys weaving things between her fingers. She walks on her toes a lot of the time, and will never, ever be able to stay grounded for too long. Her place is in the sky, and with Vaan, and with adventure, and she's loathe to let that go.
She will never, ever feel completely at ease calling royalty by name, though.
Had a bit of a fangirly attitude about Ashe for the LONGEST TIME, because most young Dalmascan girls went through a phase where they wanted to be just like the little princess Ashe.
