Notes from Katsucon:

-Don't be fooled by her innocent facade, [livejournal.com profile] memlu is awesome.

-As is [livejournal.com profile] vikki. All two seconds I saw of her! Sorry Vikki!

-Gee D.C, you sure do have big escalators!

-The (French) Revolution is in fact now. Or soon, given the number of Le Chevalier D'Eon cosplayers were abounds.

-Speaking of which "POMPADOUR!" "WHAT?" "MADAME POMPADOUR!" "WHAT? From HISTORY?" "... ... ... from D'Eon." "... oh."

- most awesome item from the dealer's room: Vincent Law's pendant from Ergo Proxy. That I a) was not expecting to exist and b) was not expecting to find. Holy crap! (addendum: watching this till 2 AM with [livejournal.com profile] chirachira and [livejournal.com profile] memlu = HILARITY. ANYTHING AT 2 AM IS FUNNY. ANYTHING.)

-least awesome item: The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi pillowcases. Depicting the lolitastical main cast in lacey (and skimpy) sleepware. I will note again: PILLOW. CASES. Guys, this is why I'm not comfortable admitting that the series is not bad. It's gross shit like this. I did not get these.

-almost most awesome instance in the dealer's room: ...discussing with Mem the probability of getting GODDAMN BALTHIER again out of those Ivalice Trading Arts figures. And then opening the box two seconds later to discover you've scored an Agrias. EAT THAT, FANBOYS.

(Note: the second one was a Ramza. This went to Chira. I don't know, somebody loved me that day.)

-The Girl Who Leapt Through Time apparently inspires me to totally run off at the mouth about weird childhood instances I'm not sure needed to be remembered. Or shared. Also, makes me cry. Crap, world, go see this movie. (same goes for: Millenium Actress, but I'd seen this one before, so I was at least prepared.)

-Hey, remember that time Dumbledore dated a Nazi?

-Shut up, Muun.

-Seriously, shut up. YOU TALK WAY TOO MUCH.

-As evidenced by the fact you lost your voice on the second day.

- ...

- COMMUNISM.

... *this is me staring at the monitor, slack-jawed with pure WANT IT NOW*

I did not know that d'Eon was popular enough to have that many cosplayers! Interesting~

I didn't know either! But according to the Maximillien (who was GREAT), there were actually two groups doing D'Eon that day!

the pendant might've made me scream a little. and then I, um, wore it for the rest of the con. This, and Memlu was able to find the first five official EP DVDs! The one's that aren't getting distributed anymore! I don't understand it either.

I am so going to have to look for pictures now. Because I totally want to see that Maximillien. ♥ Two groups, though? Niiiice.

I WOULD HAVE SCREAMED TOO. If Anime Boston doesn't have one of those, I'm going to be very heartbroken. D: AND WHAT, the official DVDs? Like, the ones from the now-defunct Geneon USA?

... why didn't I go to Katsucon? XD That is one epic dealer's room.

HAHAHAHA DUMBLEDORE. Aw, Dumbledore. Have we not all dated super-fine Nazis? I believe the answer is "no."

I can't stop making jokes about Vincent's terrible love poetry. At this point, I'm pitching the jokes to myself. THX, GAIS.

PS You are so awesome omg. Even if you are a commie. (Seriously, you are so awesome. Thank you so much for coming down and hanging out with me and also not punching me in the head. A VICTORY ALL AROUND.)

He keeps a little journal tucked inside his uniform, its pages filled with the briefest and most breathless of observations. 'Today Re-l nearly smiled at me!'

I just pretend a Suzumiya Haruhi fandom doesn't exist at all and I am happy.

I still want to buy the DVD for Toki o Kakeru Shoujo and frame it on my wall.

I KNOW THE TRUTH OF THE PSALMS AND I STILL LAUGH. Oh man, D'Eon cosplay is made of epic win.

Yeah, Suzumiya Haruhi kind of terrifies me. At AX a friend and I snuck into a Geneon panel (Kyou Kara Maou and Shounen Onmyouji = wow that's a lot of guy/guy subtext) and they brought in the actress that does Yuki's voice from Haruhi. You could see the atmosphere of the room do a 180 from previously discussed shows to guys having to be warned not to ask really creepy personal questions of her. *shudder*

Even if I've been told it's an interesting story I can't bring myself to watch it because of things like that.

I got all the FFT trading arts figurines as a boxset; Agrias and Ramza chill on my nightstand with (giant) FFXII Balthier, while Delita and Ovelia live at work with (giant) Gabranath, who wears Indiana Jones' fedora. ... I've been meaning to take a picture of that last part, there.

What does the Balthier one look like? Is it worth my time to find a Mini-Me for GuardianofMyDreams!Balthier???

IN CONCLUSION, PLS TO BE GIVING [livejournal.com profile] chirachira LOVE FOR ME. Here's some for you: <3333!

I think the only thing that could make that picture of Gabranth better would be if he had a lightsaber.

The Balthier is actually pretty spiffy! With his even more pinched waste and his terribly well-detailed leather pants! He's actually sort of adorable in Tactics form, and my Agrias is currently pointing her sword very warningly at his crotch. The problem is I got him as the last figurine on sale at a small local con, and I'd made the mistake of telling friends on hand: "Actually, you know, the only one I'd be slightly disappointed in getting would be Balthier. Since he's only in the remake..." ...I sort of jinxed myself there. Which is hilarious, when the big FFXII playarts version of him is invariably the most expensive of the figures on sale in dealer's room. (Vaan is invariably the cheapest, poor bastard. Look SCREW YOU GUYS ALL HAIL THE FUTURE PIRATE KING)

SUZUMIYA HARUHI HAS NO FANDOM. NOPE.

(Actually, my least favourite part of SH is the art style. I bet there would be a lot less creepy fans if it were drawn by... gosh, I dunno, Hayao Miyazaki!)

The art style is exactly what continually turns me off of the series. It's a pity. It's a quirky story. It's gorgeously animated. The characters are fun and the comedic timing is often genius! But it's also impossible to like guiltlessly because it visually panders to the gross moe genre so blatantly (and intentionally) I just never feel quite right endorsing it in any way. I can deal with exploitive fanservice! I watched My-HiME! I liked My-HiME! But the difference between the fanservice in My-HiME and the fanservice in Suzumiya Haruhi is that the characters actually look like they've hit puberty. I think I'd have a lot less issues with EVERYTHING in Suzumiya Haruhi if a single one of these female characters actually looked like a highschool student. Instead it gives off the skeevy feel of 'she's 16!!11 totally!!111 NEVERMIND SHE LOOKS TWELVE HURHURHUR" which sort of gives a lot of the creepier fanboys a free pass to be creepy as hell.

Also, I'm hard pressed to remember (I could be wrong) if we even ever see an adult female character in the series, EVEN AS A ONE SHOT, who is 1) not a timetraveler or 2) in a maid costume. IT JUST BOTHERS ME, OKAY.

this is why I must restore balance to the force by writing Kyon/Itsuki I mean what? No, I didn't say anything!
