“Hm?” The jounin turned from where he’d been standing at the riverbank, hands on his hip and brow raised, and Sakura winced. Already this felt like a bad idea. A wet Tenten was sitting a little off to the side, toweling her head off with a curious glance their way. Sakura hadn’t wanted to interrupt anything.
Gai didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he seemed quite pleased, which…Didn’t make her feel much better about it, actually. “Ah, Sakura,” he said with a hearty nod. “I’ve been hoping to speak with you.”
“…You have…?” Out of the corner of her eye, Sakura saw Tenten’s bite her lip politely. Taking that for an omen, she tried to continue, “Ah, I was wondering--”
“So. You’ve chosen Lee.”
“About Lee-san-” Sakura started again, and then blinked as the jounin laid a hand across her shoulder. Lee’s sensei, Sakura noticed not for the first time, was /huge/. And he was sparkling again. It was a little daunting.
“There’s no one better,” Gai told her so sincerely Sakura blushed. Oh, he didn’t mean…“These are the sweet last days of youth, and it is always inspiring to see affection blossom even through the greatest of adversities.” …/That/. Sakura felt the flush go deeper. The news had gotten around, then.
“Thank you...” she said, uncertainly. “Er, have you-”
“I approve wholeheartedly. I know Lee’s heart is in the right hands and that you will take good care of it, as his most precious person…”
It would’ve come to this eventually, of course. There was no escaping it. Though Sakura had hoped it might be a little longer…She shifted uncomfortably, and smiled; trying to be flattered, and trying not to notice Tenten staring a little too intently out across the water, and how /she/ she had her lips pursed firmly together in an effort not to giggle.
‘Oh, wait until you get a boyfriend,’ Sakura growled mentally.
“And at the threshold of adulthood, it is only expected that you may be in need of guidance…”
Sakura erked. That sounded eerily like the line her mother had pulled on her earlier that week, right before she’d launched into a long lecture on, on—
Oh. Oh no. She felt the flash of panic. Oh, hell no.
“Actually, Gai-sensei--”
“…There are many fresh fruits…”
/Fruits./
“I was just wondering--”
“To be harvested and enjoyed—“
“I WAS JUST WONDERING WHERE LEE-SAN MIGHT--”
Something broke the surface of the river.
“-Be,” Sakura finished in a tiny voice.
“Allright!” Tenten shouted. She sprung to her feet and gave the stopwatch she seemed to have pulled out of her pocket a final click and a once over. “…Eight minutes, and forty seven seconds—that’s a new personal best, Lee!”
